  • If You Had to Change Your Name, What Would Your New Name be?

    Daily writing prompt
If you had to change your name, what would your new name be?

We all have a name given to us at birth, often chosen with care and meaning by our parents. It’s a fundamental part of our identity. But have you ever stopped to think, if you could officially change your name, what would it be?
For me, the answer is clear: Jude.

I was fortunate enough to grow up Catholic, and a beautiful tradition within the faith is the Sacrament of Confirmation. During this sacrament, you have the opportunity to choose a saint’s name to add to your own, a spiritual augmentation that holds deep personal significance. I chose Jude after Saint Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes.

This name isn’t just a religious nod for me; it’s a constant, powerful reminder that even when things seem their most challenging or utterly bleak, there’s always a glimmer of hope. It grounds me, encouraging perseverance and faith that difficulties can and will improve. In a world that often presents its share of “hopeless causes,” my chosen name serves as an anchor.

Beyond its spiritual resonance, “Jude” also has a wonderful presence in popular culture. Who can forget The Beatles’ iconic and uplifting song, “Hey Jude”? That song alone brings a smile to my face and reinforces the positive, encouraging feelings associated with the name.

While my given name, bestowed upon me by my parents, is one I cherish and find beautiful in its own right, the opportunity to officially embrace “Jude” as my primary name would be a powerful affirmation of my beliefs and a daily dose of optimism. For now, I’ll happily continue to carry it as a meaningful augmentation, a reminder that even in the face of the impossible, hope always prevails.

What about you? If you had the chance to change your name, what would you choose and why? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
